The Hedgehog, Skunk, Porcupine and Pufferfish

Chapter 3: Puffer Fish

Finally, it felt like Hedgehog, Porcupine and Skunk had met and made friends with everyone in the ocean except one, Puffer Fish!

Puffer Fish had quills…lots of them and she was quick to use them if she felt like it. She was just too scary.

Finally, one day the three friends decided it was time to go and talk to Puffer Fish. After all, if they did not try to be friends with her, she might just decide to kill them!

They lined up, holding hands outside Puffer Fish’s door. Now the question was who would knock on Puffer Fish’s door. No one wanted to be the one to the one to bell the cat!

Skunk said, “Hedgehog should go. He looks like a baby puffer fish.”

Hedgehog said, “No way! Skunk should go, he looks like a normal animal.”

Porcupine said, “I can’t go, my quills are too big. They will scare her.”

Finally, they decided to pull out seaweed plants and whoever got the smallest would go knock.

Porcupine was very fast, and he burrowed into the sand and uprooted the biggest plant.

Hedgehog managed to uproot a medium plant.

Skunk was slow so he had no option but to pick out the smallest, most miserable looking plant!

Skunk dragged himself to the Puffer Fish’s door trying his best to look like a normal animal. He knocked as softly as he could hoping Puffer Fish would not answer.

Puffer Fish had been watching the commotion outside her window with great interest.

As soon as she heard the knock, she rushed to her door to open it!

Meanwhile, Hedgehog and Porcupine had decided to join Skunk.

Together they asked, “Do you want to be friends with us?”

Puffer Fish said, “Only if you can throw quills at people.”

Porcupine and Hedgehog were delighted to hear that, but they still asked, “Throw quills! What do you even mean by that? We are champs at that!”

Now Skunk stayed behind, feeling rather left out. What was he going to do to impress Puffer Fish?

Meanwhile, Porcupine and Hedgehog were having fun showing off their quill throwing skills.

Then Puffer Fish asked, “What can the Skunk do?”

Just then Skunk had a brilliant idea. He decided to release a great, big stink. It was so stinky that Puffer Fish felt she would faint, and Porcupine and Hedgehog who had experience with Skunk’s stinks, still gagged.

Puffer Fish said, “Wow! What a smell! You can definitely be my friend too with that super power of yours.”

With this, the pact of friendship was sealed. They played every day, spending their time tricking animals and shooting quills.
